    Assouline Pop Art Style

In the 1950s, a young Pittsburgh native named Andy Warhol was earning a comfortable living as a commercial illustrator in New York. But his ambitions went far beyond that: he soon began painting Coca-Cola bottles and filling a gallery with paintings of Campbell's Soup cans. He certainly wasn't the first to create a Pop art work, but Warhol quickly became a brand, synonymous with a new art form that embodied everything that was young, subversive, bright, and fresh.

From proto-supermodel Twiggy with false eyelashes and a Union Jack dress in Swinging London to Eero Aarnio's Ball chair, Pop art profoundly influenced fashion, furniture design, and product design, so much so that it's difficult to separate the look and feel of the 1960s and 1970s from the art of the era. Indeed, to Warhol's delight, Pop art didn't just reference popular culture; it became popular culture.

After this first wave, the movement never truly disappeared. Each new generation of artists and designers has revitalized the energy of Pop Art, even giving it new directions. Today, with Instagram and TikTok on Pop-colored iPhones, social media is to contemporary audiences what advertising and Hollywood were to Pop artists sixty years ago.

Following the success of the Travel series, Assouline launches the Style series, highlighting the most iconic artistic movements and design styles, revealing their historical impact and enduring influence on our culture. This colorful volume brings together dynamic images from different eras and media, expressing the energy and exuberance of sixty years of Pop Art style.
