Oud is one of the most renowned and controversial ingredients in perfumery. Authentic oud oil is among the most expensive raw materials in the world, derived from Aquilaria wood infected with a dark and precious resin. The rarest trees, originating from Southeast Asian jungles, can reach extremely high values and are becoming increasingly difficult to source due to overexploitation.

From an olfactory perspective, oud is exceptionally complex and multifaceted. Depending on its origin, age, and extraction method, it can reveal endless nuances: woody, spicy, floral, smoky, earthy, musky, animalic, and sometimes even leathery or wild. The search for rare oud oils to wear directly on the skin is very different from creating an oud-based fragrance.

Modern perfumery is inspired by these precious oils, which cannot be produced on a large scale due to environmental, regulatory, artistic, and economic reasons. The perfumer's talent lies in recreating these olfactory atmospheres through the skilled use of other raw materials, interpreting and reinventing the magic of oud.
